Position Overview.
We are hiring Research Associates across three focus areas:
- Science Communication: Communicating complicated climate issues to a varied audience through multiple mediums.
- Climate Analytics: Developing Jupyter notebooks to enable vulnerability and adaptation assessments using best practices within scientific and statistical approaches.
- Scientific Software Development: Build and execute scientific software and code, such as; developing an open source python library to apply cutting edge analytics techniques and data access to downscaled climate projections; build novel web based tools for visualizing climate information and executing scientific models on high performance computing on the cloud.
The Research Associate would primarily contribute to Cal-Adapt: Analytics Engine. The Research Associate position would be a good fit for early career scientists, recent graduates or current graduate students looking for salary and experience.

Candidates must be based in California and be available to work within 2024. Position Responsibilities.
Applicants will contribute their expertise via the following responsibilities:
- Scientific Analysis and Research
- Execute climate and statistical analysis on geospatial data
- Quantify probabilities of critical weather and climate events
- Generate figures, tables and other visualizations of climate data
- Execute scientific or technical writing
- Scientific Programming
- Develop, document and test scientific code in a collaborative environment
- Build Jupyter notebooks that execute complicated scientific workflow
- Develop novel data visualizations tools
- Execute modeling and data science within AWS cloud environment
- Technical writing – with a focus on documentation and tutorials
- Communication of Scientific and Technical Principles
- Produce understandable guidance on scientific best practices
- Contribute writing to hazard and vulnerability assessments
- Answer questions from users
- Document requirements gathering on technical / scientific tasks
- Engage in webinar and/or one-on-one training sessions
- Outreach and Engagement
- Perform technical writing to support outreach efforts
- Organize and participate in meetings with state agencies, non-profits, and other entities
- Communicate with decision-makers, policymakers, and energy sector professionals
- Perform stakeholder interviews and facilitate workshops
- Perform usability assessments of developed products
- Synthesize engagement efforts
- Document processes and findings for non-technical or non-scientific audiences
Depending on interest, applicants could also participate in the following tasks as interested/needed:
- Public Policy
- Attending and presenting at statewide forums
- Participating in California Energy Commission events
- Participating in California’s Fifth Climate Assessment events
- Business Development
- Organizing workshops and scientific events
- Working with governmental forms
- Reviewing and editing proposals and other technical writing
- Observing budgeting, invoicing, and bookkeeping practices
- Gaining experience collaborating in a modern, remote working environment
- Supporting development of climate vulnerability assessments
- Researching technical / methodological approaches for quantifying regional vulnerability
- Developing streamlined processes and documentation for collaborators and external partners
- Developing a cloud based repository of weather station observations:
- Researching and building QA/QC protocols for observed data
- Automating the collection of weather data and cleaning functions on AWS
- Performing exploratory data analysis on weather/climate data
- Creating web-based visualizations (and toolkits) of geospatial datasets
- Documenting platform features and code, perform additional technical/scientific writing
General position requirements:
- Periodic travel to workshops, seminars, conferences, and meetings with our partners
- This position requires a lot of computer work, applicants will need to be capable of working at a desk or computer for the majority of the workday.
- This position involves executing complex research and computational independently, in a timely fashion. This requires applicants to be able to learn new tasks, maintain focus, execute documentation processes , complete tasks independently, make timely decisions without consultation, and communicate clearly with team members.
- Perform other duties as required. We are a small team, and sometimes you’ll have to do tasks that are outside of position scope.
Required Qualification.
- Interest in a career in science, particularly applied research in environmental/climate fields
- Share our values and vision, particularly in creating an inclusive and welcoming workplace
- Demonstrated capacity to work independently
- Technical writing skills and the ability to communicate politely and effectively
- Education, experience, and/or skill in atmospheric, climate, or environmental sciences and/or data science
- Applicants for the Research Associate position are likely to have a B.S., M.S. or Ph.D.

Desired Qualifications. We anticipate applicants having some of these qualifications.
- Basic knowledge of statistics
- Familiarity with climate science concepts and general approaches
- Familiarity with geospatial data and Python (or similar language)
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Especially ability to “translate” between scientific, technical, and non-technical audiences
- Ability to self-manage tasks
- Establish training approaches for various audiences

Benefits & Compensation.
The salary for this position will be $30 to $36 per hour and higher for experienced candidates. For candidates who seek full time employment this equates to $62,400 to $74,880 per year. We are advertising this position as a remote, full-time, non-exempt position based in Sacramento, CA but will consider applicants seeking part-time employment equally.
